City Pool Upgrade to Finish by May

Despite the wet weather, the $275,750 planned renovation of Greenwood’s Eddie (Sonny) Brown Memorial Pool is moving on.

The contractor is Delta Blue Pools Inc. of Greenwood. Mayor Carolyn McAd?ams said that according to Robert Rhyne Howard, owner of Delta Blue Pools, the work should be completed before school lets out in May.

“The pool is going to look fantastic,” McAdams said.

Eddie Curry, supervisor of the city’s wastewater treatment plant, and Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks have been monitoring the progress at the pool regularly since the work began in November.

“They’ve put in all new piping all the way around here,” Curry said.

Banks said the pool’s tiles and pumping station have been changed out.

The mayor said she’s considering presenting the City Council with a resolution that would allow the pool to stay open beyond the Fourth of July. She said it could be kept open through early August, when school starts.

The pool has been staffed by firefighters, who serve as paid certified lifeguards, for the past four years, Banks said.

“The pool is near and dear to me. When I was a kid, I frequently swam in that pool,” the chief said.

At that time, retired Greenwood firefighter James Hudson served as a lifeguard. Another lifeguard Banks looked up to was Alfred Hall. “They inspired me,” Banks said.

When there was a prospect that the pool would not be able to open because of a lack of certified lifeguards, Banks and seven of his firefighters stepped forward and received lifesaving certification at Mississippi State University.

“The community needs it,” the chief said.

McAdams said she and City Hall employees selected the colors for the pool’s tile and bullnose coping.
