City Native to Lead Recycling Program

A Greenwood native has been hired as the new Greenwood? Leflore Recycling coordinator. Kenya Adams started Jan. 24.

“I’m very excited about it,” she said. “It gives me a chance to connect and reintroduce myself to the community. It’s a different task for me.”

The coordinator position became vacant Jan. 6. Anne Marie Gregory, who had served in the position since 2012, left to continue her training at Delta State University to be a dietitian.

Adams, 29, moved to Houston, Texas, after graduating from Greenwood High School in 2005. She served as an academic adviser for science, technology and public service students within the University of Houston system.

She returned to Greenwood to take care of her mother, who was undergoing surgery. After her mother recuperated, she decided to stay, McAdams said.

Gregory and Susan Bailey, the director of Greenwood Public Works, interviewed Adams and were impressed by her enthusiasm, said the mayor, who also interviewed Adams.

Adams said she’s thrilled with her new job, which involves recycling at drop-off sites as well as curbside. She said that on Thursday she was shadowing one of the center’s drivers learning the finer points about residential and commercial businesses participating in the recycling program.

McAdams said Adams went to school with Greenwood High School Principal Kenneth Pulley, and that might help get some recycling programs into the school.

Adams said the recycling program is still in its infancy and more needs to be done.

“We still have work to do to make Greenwood, Mississippi, the greenest city in Mississippi,” she said.
